DS Band Boosters Volunteer Opportunities

Listed below are the main volunteer opportunities with the DS Band Boosters. Click on the volunteer area to learn more about the needs within that area.

Of course there are other smaller specific projects for which we may need help through out the year, and we will send email help requests as they come up!

I would encourage you to try to sign up in some area if you can. It is a great way to get to know other band families and band students and really feel a part of this award winning program.

Thank you all for considering volunteering for Band Boosters and I look forward to meeting you all at band Registration Night or during marching season.

Chaperones

Parent chaperones are needed for all football games (home and away) and any marching contest or UIL events that the Band attends. Duties are very simple, we check students on and off the busses, help supervise the middle school band helpers in handing out water and soda to each band member, help carry equipment and such from the busses to the field and generally be available to help when needed.

We prefer that you ride the busses for away games or marching contests, as we need a couple of chaperones on each bus (there is also a Band Director on each bus) but if you want to help and absolutely can not ride the bus you could either drive yourself or ride with the trailer pulling crew.

You will stay with the band in the bleachers during the whole event or if it is a full day marching contest you also stay with the band when they go to eat etc. It is a great way to get to know some of our wonderful band students and you really feel a part of the event and our band family!

Pit Crew

For every game (home and away) or event we need a group of parents to help move the percussion pit equipment on to the field and off the field before and fter our show respectively. This is a very important ob to help our performance run smoothly. The band students will direct you very efficiently as to what to take and where to place it!

For away games and events you would normally also be part of the chaperone crew but for home games you can just come to the band stands half way through the 2nd quarter of the game and then leave after the show.

Trailer Pull

The band takes one large and one smaller trailer to all away games and events to transport all our equipment. We usually get the DSISD Transportation to pull the large trailer but we do need one willing parent with a large truck and bumper pull to pull our smaller trailer. This is about the size of a medium horse or stock trailer but is quite heavy when fully loaded. If you could volunteer to pull for even one game or event we would be most grateful.

The small trailer takes a 2 5/8" ball hitch. If a parent is needed to haul the large trailer, a specialized sway bar is provided by DSISD transportation.

Uniforms

Melinda and Kay do an amazing job fitting all the uniforms within the first few weeks of school. This involves fitting, making alterations and pressing. If you have any sewing or ironing skills and would be willing to help they would be most grateful. This can be a fairly flexible job time wise. In addition they have a very organized system for distributing and collecting uniforms on game and event days. This does involve volunteer help, mainly immediately after the games or on return to the Band Hall. This is a great volunteer opportunity if you pick up your students as you just have to help out while you would be waiting for your student anyway.

Concessions

This is one of our major fundraisers as Band Boosters, along with Athletic Boosters, are responsible for operating the Concession Stand. In return we receive half of the profits. Band Boosters is responsible for managing set up and the first half of the home games. This includes both Thursday and Friday games for Freshman, JV and Varsity Football. Thursday is a great time to work as it does not interfere with enjoying the Band Half Time Show, however Friday is always busy and fun! In order to help with set up you do need to be available from around 4:00 pm for the Friday night games. If you could work for even one of the home games it would be greatly appreciated. PLEASE NOTE: You must enter at the Pass Gate and sign a log for concession stand volunteers. This is a new requirement from the Athletic Booster Club.

Salt Lick Evening of Jazz

This year this is scheduled for Thursday February 7th 2008. We really need a group of volunteers to help with the Silent Auction and Set Up for the evening. We start work on soliciting items for the Silent Auction in November and those helping with set up would need to be available during the day of the event.

Tiger 5K

The Tiger 5k is tentatively scheduled for Saturday April 19th 2008, in conjunction with Founders Weekend. We need a committee of volunteers to help with planning, logistics, publicity, sponsorship and race day help. We usually start to meet and work on the run in January. if you think you could be part of our Tiger 5K team we would be most grateful.

HEB Cards

We are continuing to expand out HEB card fundraising program. We are looking for neighborhood contacts who would be willing to order and distribute cards for families in their area. The system is very organized and so it is not a hard task and only requires a couple of hours a month from home. This is a very exciting new fundraiser and we would love to be able to expand this significantly this year.
